Paranoia
Kole Tallman "Paranoia"
18x24, Paint On Canvas, 2023
I started my project with planning through a variety of colors, different shades and palettes in which i found some discerning features of which i could incorporate into my work, i eventually found emotion within these colors and decided upon revealing what emotions and feelings i feel are conveyed through these palettes, starting with my deep red piece “paranoia”
My process consists of palette creation and color theory adapted into the canvas emotions that I wished to display. A lot of the piece consists of brighter reds clashing with dark burgundy or deep blacks, heavily using contrast and black points to draw attention across the piece.
The artwork symbolizes paranoia, featuring many faces and heads around you in a dark pit/apocalyptic setting. My main point is to convey how anxiety and paranoia are mutual more often than not, everyone is overworked about some topic in their life, all the faces surrounding you are just sad and worried.
Difficulty mainly stemmed from colors and reverse shading, normally when you shade to add texture, you start with lighter colors and add darker ones based of where light is coming from, however in my piece a majority of the canvas is a dark red base, meaning I was adding lighter colors and working them into the background.
The artwork is mostly a surreal art piece, definitely some abstract features, the shiny, plastic looking heads add a sense of derealization into the mix of the sea of red.
